Information Regarding Educational Furniture

ImageThe British Education system has not been very active in terms of innovation for School Furniture. For a long time there were no notable developments in the design of Classroom Furniture, in fact the only time there was a new addition was the 1970’s when the polypropylene chairs were introduced in British classrooms. Otherwise all along the school system was content with supplying standard Classroom Furniture regardless of the size of the children. Matters only improved in 2006 when a motion was tabled in the British parliament that addressed the matter of backaches in children where it was found that up to 13% of school going children between 13-16 years suffered back problems leading to about 8% of them requiring medical attention, the cause was attributed to poorly designed School Furniture. A study found that children had grown in size since the standard School Furniture being used was designed. This survey led to the British and European standards for tables and chairs for schools. A subsequent survey was carried out in 2006 that made some modifications on the earlier survey as well as introduced some fire safety features to be incorporated in the design.

The two surveys on standards led to the UK government rethinking the idea of Educational Furniture in general and standards were introduced not just in schools but in other institutions of higher learning. The education system was now woken up to the fact that all stakeholders needed to be involved in recommendations on how best to improve School Furniture. Recommendations were made by various parties and one of the most active was the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) that worked with the UK department of education to come up with some useful proposals. After research it was agreed that the UK government make a move towards getting good School Furniture that was relevant to the current learning trends such as adaptable Classroom Furniture that can be used for a variety of uses as well as allow children room for movement. The School furniture needed to be efficient, sustainable and durable too. A key consideration for the School Furniture was it had to be ergonomic as well to lead to a good posture by the students to enhance concentration and reduce cases of back pain.

The UK education department has also been urged by various stakeholders to remove barriers to education, communication and free information within the classroom environment. However the UK government cannot be expected to do this all on its own, it is the responsibility of the numerous furniture suppliers, who are probably parents too, to work with and make proposals to the government on appropriate innovative designs to further the cause of well designed School Furniture for the benefit of all. The other partners in the European Union too should come up with suggestions from their own countries on measures to adopt to ensure that best industry practices are carried in the production of School Furniture across the region. With the above measures and suggestions implemented there should be no reason for UK School Furniture should be the best ensuring children enjoy learning.
